Imari porcelain is a distinctive style of Japanese export ceramic originating from the Arita region and traded through the port of Imari. It traditionally features underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red and gilded decoration.

These vessels were formed from high-fired kaolin clay, painted with underglaze blue pigment, fired at high temperatures, and then decorated with detailed overglaze enamels before undergoing a final lower-temperature glaze firing.

Authentic Imari ware is recognised by its characteristic palette of underglaze blue and overglaze rust-red, often combined with floral panels, asymmetrical compositions, and slight irregularities in hand-applied enamelling.

A pair of Imari vases provides balance when positioned symmetrically on a sideboard, fireplace mantelpiece, or console table, contrasting well against both neutral modern walls and dark timber surfaces.
