Imari porcelain refers to hard-paste ceramic wares produced in the Arita region of Japan and exported through the port of Imari. Developed in the seventeenth century, these pieces became renowned for their distinctive palette combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze iron-red enamel and gilding.

Traditional Imari ceramics are crafted from kaolin-rich hard-paste porcelain clay. Decorative patterns are executed using an initial underglaze cobalt blue application, followed by a high-temperature firing, after which iron-red enamel and gold leaf details are applied before a secondary lower-temperature firing.

Authentic antique Imari pieces typically feature hand-painted variations in decoration, dark or uneven underglaze blue tones, and visible spur marks on the unglazed base where the piece rested during kiln firing. Weight, visible potting irregularities, and wear to the overglaze gilding also indicate age.
