FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to ceramics produced in and around Arita in Hizen province, Japan, and exported via the port of Imari. Developed in the seventeenth century, the style is defined by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, gilding, and intricate geometric or floral designs.

Traditional Imari pieces are composed of high-fired kaolin porcelain clay. The base decoration uses underglaze cobalt blue oxide, followed by a clear glaze, and subsequent firings for overglaze enamels including iron red, orange, and gold metallic accents.

Authentic pieces feature crisp cobalt underglaze, hand-applied enamel decoration with visible surface texture, unglazed foot rims showing smooth porcelain clay, and characteristic motifs such as panels, foliage, and sculpted lid finials.

Imari ceramics function as architectural accents when styled against neutral backdrops, paired with dark wood furniture, or integrated into modern gallery displays alongside contemporary artwork and minimalist decorative items.
