Large Gilded Mirror C.1880

19th century
Description

Very impressive late 19th.c gilded mirror or pier glass c.1880. Standing 84½" tall, ideal to stand on the floor in a hallway or as a dressing mirror in a bedroom or clothes shop perhaps. 39½" x 66½" mirror plate with a bevelled edge. Giltwood and gesso frame with a superb Classical style arrow quiver, torch and crown of roses at the centre of the frieze above the mirror. Flanked with long turned and fluted columns with acanthus leaf detail and floral garlands to the plinths below. Original gilding with some retouching where the gesso was damaged, most obviously around the base. Generally excellent colour and condition.

Victorian Neoclassical mirrors draw inspiration from classical Greek and Roman architecture, incorporating architectural features such as fluted columns, friezes, urns, and egg-and-dart mouldings into gilded timber frames.

These mirrors were constructed from pine or lime wood frames, coated with layers of gesso and composition mouldings, and finished with applied gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period pieces feature original timber backboards, evidence of hand-carved details or applied gesso moulding, minor oxidisation or age spots on the glass, and natural wear to the gold leaf showing red clay bole underneath.

A large mirror is often positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, opposite a window to maximise natural light, or placed as a focal point above a hallway console table to create visual depth.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry bristle brush or feather duster, avoiding water or liquid chemical cleaners that can dissolve gesso or strip fragile gold leaf.
