Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors gained prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries as focal points placed directly above fireplace hearths. Designed to catch light from lamps and chandeliers, these mirrors enhanced illumination and visually expanded reception rooms in period homes.

19th-century frames were typically constructed from carved timber or plaster composition over a wooden core. Gold leaf was applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques over layers of bole clay and gesso ground.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural age distress, including minor cracking to the gesso, wearing of gold leaf revealing reddish bole underneath, and mercury silvering degradation on the mirror glass such as dark spotting or foxing.

Mount the mirror above a architectural fireplace surround or position it atop a low console table in a hallway. The rich metallic patina provides a textural contrast against dark paint schemes or neutral modern interiors.

Dust the frame lightly using a dry, soft-bristled brush to avoid damaging delicate gilding. Avoid water, commercial spray cleaners, or solvent polishes, as moisture dissolves gesso layers and strips historical gold leaf.
