Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A coffer is a wooden storage chest featuring a hinged lid, historically used during the 17th century as a main repository for linens, textiles, and household valuables. Often crafted from solid English oak, these pieces featured panelled construction and decorative relief carving indicative of Jacobean and Carolean styling.

Period coffers were constructed using pegged mortise and tenon joinery, framed solid oak panels, and hand-forged iron lock plates or hinges. Craftsmen frequently incorporated decorative carved details such as arcaded friezes, lozenge motifs, and contrasting wood inlays.

Authentic 17th century coffers display uneven hand-planed surfaces, hand-cut wooden pegs securing the frame joints, and natural oxidisation around original iron fittings. Wear typically appears on the base of the stile feet alongside evidence of hand-tool marks across the interior and rear boards.

A carved oak coffer functions effectively at the foot of a bed, in an entryway, or positioned behind a modern sofa as a low console. Combining the dark oak patination with neutral linen upholstery and contemporary artwork creates a balanced historic-modern aesthetic.

Preserve the original finish by applying a quality beeswax polish once or twice per year using a soft cotton cloth in the direction of the wood grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent joint movement, warping, or timber shrinkage.
