A very nice Italian walnut coffer, standing on lion paw feet, dated 1699 with the initials GGL, in overall great colour and condition.

A cassone is an Italian term for a large, decorative storage chest or coffer. Popular from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance and Baroque periods, these chests were traditionally commissioned as marriage gifts to store household linens, dowry textiles, and valuables.

Cassoni were typically crafted from solid timbers such as walnut, oak, or chestnut. Construction techniques involved hand-dovetailed or mortise-and-tenon joints, deeply carved relief panels, moulded bases, and hand-forged iron lock plates.
