A five-plank coffer, also known as a board chest, is an early form of storage container constructed from five main solid wooden boards fastened together. Originating in medieval Europe and widely produced into the seventeenth century, these coffers served as essential household storage for textiles, clothing, and domestic goods.

Early coffers were predominantly crafted from solid native hardwoods such as oak or elm, assembled using wooden pegs or wrought-iron nails. Lock plates, hasps, and strap hinges were hand-hammered from iron by local blacksmiths.
