Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A panel coffer, also known as a joined chest, is a wooden storage box built using mortise and tenon joinery. Popular throughout the 17th century, these pieces feature inset timber panels framed by solid stiles and rails, primarily used for storing household textiles and valuables.

Early coffers were predominantly crafted from solid English oak, secured with hand-carved wooden dowels or pegs rather than metal nails. They feature hand-planed panels, simple moulded edges, and hand-forged iron locks or strap hinges.

Authentic period coffers show signs of hand-tooling, original pegged joint construction, hand-wrought ironwork, and natural wear along the base of the stiles. Untouched surfaces usually exhibit deep oxidisation and historic wax patina in recessed areas.

Position the coffer at the foot of a bed, in an entryway, or as a focal point in a living room. Pairing dark oak timber with soft modern textiles, neutral wall tones, or modern ceramics creates a balanced contrast between historic character and contemporary design.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive humidity to prevent the timber from shrinking or splitting.
