Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region of Hizen province and shipped via the port of Imari. Originating in the 17th century, the style is defined by a distinct colour palette of underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red enamels and gilded highlights.

These plates are crafted from fine kaolin porcelain clay fired at high temperatures. The cobalt blue decoration is applied directly to the bisque body before initial glazing, after which iron red enamels, additional pigments, and liquid gold leaf are applied over the glaze and fired in a secondary kiln.
