Imari porcelain originated in the Arita region of Japan during the seventeenth century and was exported to Europe via the port of Imari. The style gained widespread popularity in the West for its elaborate hand-painted decoration combining underglaze blue with overglaze red and gold enamels.

Imari porcelain is crafted from fine kaolin clay fired at high temperatures. The production process involves painting initial designs in underglaze cobalt blue, applying a clear glaze, and performing a second firing before adding overglaze iron-red enamels, green accents, and metallic gilding.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-painted variations in the brushwork, characteristic spur marks on the underside from kiln firing, and a distinct palette of cobalt blue, iron red, and gilding. Later reproductions often display overly uniform printed patterns and lighter weight body materials.

Imari plates are frequently displayed on wall mounts in grouped arrangements above furniture, or placed on plate stands within bookcases and sideboards. The striking contrast of blue and rust tones complements both traditional dark wood and contemporary neutral backdrops.
