19th century
Description

Antique Pagoda Top Single Fusee Mantel Clock By Barrett London Working Order.

This beautiful single fusee mantel clock has a wooden case with a lovely rich colour and grain. The top of the case is then a pagoda shape with a lovely, shaped front with a brass ball to the top. The body of the case is then square with two lovely ring handles to each side as well as lovely brass inlay to the front. There is then a further moulding leading to the base of the case which is finished by four bun feet.

The dial is then painted and set out in black Roman numerals with a thin ring of dashes to the outside marking the minutes. The centre of the dial is then signed by the maker “Barrett London”. The dial is finally finished by two shaped hands as well as a domed, protective glass set into the brass bezel.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pagoda top single fusee mantel clock is a traditional British timepiece featuring a tiered roof profile inspired by East Asian architecture, powered by a cone-shaped pulley mechanism called a fusee to maintain constant timekeeping tension.

These clocks were typically constructed with solid mahogany or rosewood veneered cases, brass inlay work, enamelled or painted metal dials, and hand-cut brass gears housed within steel and brass plates.

Authentic examples feature a chain or gut-driven fusee movement visible through side viewing windows or rear access doors, brass carrying handles, hand-painted Roman numerals, and cast brass bezel surrounds.

Position the clock as a focal point on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or study bookshelf paired with contemporary artwork or architectural brassware to balance classic craftsmanship with modern elements.

Keep the timber case away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid cracking, polish the woodwork periodically with natural beeswax, and have the mechanical movement cleaned and lubricated every five years.
