Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis Philippe mirrors typically feature a rectangular frame with softly rounded upper corners, squared bottom corners, and a slim profile. They commonly incorporate gilded gesso over wood and feature subtle decorative borders such as beaded or pearl-and-reel mouldings.

These mirrors were traditionally constructed using a carved timber frame coated with gesso, a plaster-like compound. The frame was then finished using water gilding with fine gold leaf and fitted with silvered or mercury glass.

Authentic period mirrors feature distinctive foxing, oxidisation, and dark spotting on the glass plate from the historical silvering process. The gilded frame will typically show age-related wear, revealing red or grey clay bole undercoats beneath the gold leaf.

Place the mirror above a fireplace mantel, console table, or sideboard to act as a focal point. The distressed patina of historical gilding provides contrast against modern painted walls and minimalist architecture.

Dust the frame lightly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting delicate gold leaf. Avoid liquid cleaners or solvents on the gilded gesso, and clean the glass plate using a damp cloth without touching the frame.
