Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French Rococo giltwood mirrors are characterised by asymmetrical scrollwork, acanthus leaf motifs, floral garlands, and organic cartouche forms. Developed during the reign of Louis XV in the 18th century, these designs emphasised fluidity, natural forms, and delicate relief carving finished with genuine gold leaf.

Traditional French giltwood frames were carved from softwoods such as lime or pine, then coated with layers of gesso made from chalk and animal glue. A layer of bole, a refined clay paste, was applied before water gilding with micro-thin leaves of gold, which were subsequently burnished with an agate stone.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery marks on the reverse, signs of natural gesso shrinkage or fine cracking known as craquelure, and subtle surface wear where the red or grey clay bole shows through the gold leaf. The mirror glass itself often displays hand-blown irregularities or minor oxidisation spotting.

A pair of gilded mirrors can be positioned symmetrically on either side of a contemporary doorway, above matching bedside tables, or flanking a central piece of art. The warmth of the patinated gold gilding provides textural contrast against neutral paint schemes and minimal architectural lines.

Giltwood frames should only be dusted with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, as moisture or liquid cleaners can dissolve water-gilded gesso surfaces. Mirror glass should be cleaned carefully using a damp microfibre cloth, ensuring no liquid seeps behind the frame edge to prevent damage to the silvering.
