Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and exported via the port of Imari. Developed during the seventeenth century, this style typically features characteristic underglaze cobalt blue paired with overglaze iron red and gilded accents.

Traditional Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired porcelain clay using underglaze and overglaze application techniques. Dark blue decorative elements are painted using cobalt pigment prior to initial firing, followed by iron-red enamel and gold detailing applied before a second lower-temperature glaze firing.

Authentic historical Imari porcelain displays hand-painted brushwork with slight natural variations in colour density and glaze thickness. Key indicators include minor spur marks on the underside, cobalt blue underglaze bleeding slightly into the white porcelain body, and unglazed foot rings displaying fine white clay.

An Imari porcelain plate can be displayed upright on a wooden plate stand atop a sideboard, arranged as part of a wall gallery, or housed within a glass display cabinet.
