Painting an Endearing Bond Boy with King Charles Spaniel Puppy C.1680 Circle of Mary Beale

17th century
Description

An Endearing Bond: Portrait of a Boy with His King Charles Spaniel Puppy, c.1680

Circle of Mary Beale (1633–1699)

Subject & Medium

An exquisite late 17th-century oil on canvas portraying a young boy tenderly cradling his King Charles spaniel puppy—a breed beloved by the English aristocracy for its elegance, gentle temperament, and close association with the royal courts of Charles I and Charles II.

Titled An Endearing Bond, the portrait captures a rare domestic moment from the Restoration era, intimate rather than ceremonial. Themes of innocence, loyalty, and familial warmth resonate through the child’s close relationship with his pet.

Composition & Technique

The sitter appears in a graceful three-quarter pose, his youthful frame angled slightly toward the viewer, with his head inclined softly, lending the portrait a serene, protective air. His right arm encircles the spaniel securely while the dog nestles into his embrace, its relaxed body reinforcing a mutual bond of affection and trust.

He wears a fine silk or satin tunic in a muted yet lustrous tone—possibly silver-grey or chestnut—accented with delicate lace at the collar and cuffs. The fabric’s sweeping folds are rendered with fluid brushwork, contrasting with the careful detailing of the lace. The textures play against the spaniel’s soft fur, shimmering in warm browns and creams.

The palette is rich yet balanced: earthy ochres and umbers form a subdued background, while the boy’s luminous complexion and hands emerge with subtle modelling. Smooth transitions describe the flesh, while more painterly, expressive strokes capture clothing and fur, producing harmony between precision and freedom.

Inscription

Verso inscribed “Bl,” adding intrigue to its attribution within the circle of Mary Beale.

About the Artist – Circle of Mary Beale

Though unsigned, the work is attributed to the Circle of Mary Beale, one of 17th-century England’s most respected portraitists and among the very few women to sustain a professional career at the time. Beale was known for her warmth of expression, sensitive colouring, and her ability to reveal personality with subtlety.

Works by her circle often display similar hallmarks—refined figure modelling, softly luminous palettes, and an intimacy unusual for the period. This portrait exemplifies those qualities, likely painted by an artist trained in her studio or deeply influenced by her methods.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 17th-century English Baroque portraiture, influenced by artists such as Sir Peter Lely and Mary Beale, is distinguished by soft chiaroscuro lighting, relaxed poses, rich fabrics, and the frequent inclusion of symbolic elements like pet dogs.

Artisans employed ground mineral pigments bound in linseed oil, applied onto hand-stretched linen canvases. Frames were constructed from carved wood or molded gesso, finished with hand-applied gold leaf.

Authentic period works typically display natural age-related craquelure patterns, evidence of historical hand-spun canvas weaving, hand-forged tacks along the stretcher edges, and uneven oxidisation of historical varnish layers.

An antique portrait creates an engaging focal point when integrated into a curated gallery wall, hung above a mahogany sideboard, or set against dark, saturated wall colours within a traditional library setting.

Keep oil paintings away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas of high humidity to prevent pigment fading and canvas warping. Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding wet cleaning solutions or commercial polishes.
