Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Octagonal Bowl, Daisy Makeig-jones, C.1915

1900 - 1920
Description

Rare Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre octagonal bowl, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones c.1915. The interior features the celebrated "celestial dragon" motif surrounded by an intricate oriental-style border, while the exterior is finished in a deep blue lustre with stylized gold medallions and floral patterns in the oriental taste. Fairyland Lustreware production was organized into eight distinct color schemes, four reflecting natural light conditions: day, night, sunset, and moonlight. Occasionally, Makeig-Jones combined two schemes within a single piece to achieve particularly striking visual effects. The combination of this rare form, distinctive coloring, and refined decoration ensures strong appeal to advanced Wedgwood collectors. Works by Daisy Makeig-Jones have shown steady growth in value over the years, making this bowl not only a decorative treasure but also a sound long-term investment.

Height: 5 cm

Diameter: 9.2 cm

Condition: Excellent. Reflections may appear in the images — these are not flaws in the item, but rather visual effects caused by the lustre glaze. Slight distortions or highlights are a natural result of its iridescent surface.

The stand is not included in the sale.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones for Wedgwood in the 1910s and 1920s, Fairyland Lustre features mythical motifs, iridescent metallic glazes, and detailed gilt outlining, bridging Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles.

These pieces were crafted from porcelain, treated with iridescent lustre glazes containing metallic salts, and decorated through multi-stage firings alongside hand-applied gold gilding.

Authentic pieces carry the impressed or printed Wedgwood makers mark on the base, along with specific pattern numbers beginning with Z, crisp gilt details, and characteristic iridescent multi-coloured glaze effects.

Display the bowl on a dark wood sideboard, glass console table, or lit shelving unit where ambient lighting highlights the iridescent glazes and detailed gilded patterns.

Clean gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to remove dust, avoiding water immersion, liquid cleaners, or abrasive materials that could erode the delicate gilding and lustre glazes.
