Rare Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre “Celestial Dragon” Bowl by Daisy Makeig-jones, C.1915

Rare Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre “Celestial Dragon” bowl, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones c.1915, pattern Z4831. According to “Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre: The Work of Daisy Makeig-Jones” by Una des Fontaines (1975), this pattern was intended to be produced only with a green lustre exterior and specific motifs. This octagonal example instead features an exceptionally uncommon pinkish-mauve lustre, a color variation not recorded in standard catalogues, with large gilded medallions resembling flowers and abstract motifs, bordered with a lavender band of gold flowers. The interior has a mother-of-pearl lustre with gold and bluish stains, centered by a gilded “celestial dragon” surrounded by stylized pseudo-oriental calligraphic symbols. Such deviations are attributed by the author to the creative freedom and experimental approach of Daisy Makeig-Jones and her team, who occasionally produced unique or trial pieces for exhibitions, special orders, or as a result of artistic innovation. With no recorded counterpart in catalogues, museum holdings or auction archives, this bowl is almost certainly a one-off creation, making it a highly desirable addition to an advanced Wedgwood collection.

Condition: Minor superficial rubbing to the gilding on the interior and rim edges (only visible under magnification). On the sharp corners of the upper rim, there are small areas 1–2 mm in size where lighter tones predominate — these may be part of the designer’s composition, or possibly slight wear. Otherwise in excellent condition. Reflections may appear in the images — these are not flaws in the item, but rather visual effects caused by the lustre glaze. Slight distortions or highlights are a natural result of its iridescent surface.
