Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Giltwood mirrors from the 18th century are defined by carved wooden frames coated in gesso and finished with applied gold leaf. Popular styles from this period, such as Rococo and Neoclassical, featured elaborate architectural elements, acanthus motifs, scrolling foliage, and beaded border mouldings.

Frames were carved from native woods such as pine, lime, or oak, then covered with multiple layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and animal glue. Red or grey clay bole was applied over the gesso to act as a base for water gilding, where thin sheets of gold leaf were burnished onto the surface.

Authentic pieces exhibit visible signs of hand-carving irregularities, hand-cut joinery on the wooden backboards, and natural wear where the underlying clay bole shows through worn gold leaf. Mercury-silvered glass plates often display characteristic dark spot oxidisation, known as foxing, and mild distortion.

An ornate gilded frame provides visual interest when hung above a modern minimalist sideboard, fireplace mantel, or console table. Placing historical mirrors against neutral, contemporary backdrops creates a striking juxtaposition between traditional ornamentation and clean modern lines.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or chemical cleaners which dissolve traditional water gilding. Wipe glass plates carefully with a damp cloth, taking care not to let moisture seep behind the frame borders into the gesso structure.
