Description

Pair of late C18th Italian rococo style gilt-wood framed Venetian girandole pier mirrors.

Atmospheric and decorative pair of Venetian giltwood-framed mirrors with elaborate carved frames and ‘ribbed’ shell-style central cresting . The base of each frame carved with a stylised zoomorphic lion’s mask fitted with a metal ring to originally hold a candle-arm branch.

Minor historic restorations but with no losses and retaining the original gilded surface and aged patina. Retaining the apparently original silvered mirror plates , with signs of desirable deterioration and speckling . The verso fitted with original back boards .

Smart pair of gilt mirrors to add symmetry, light and decoration to a period scheme .

Italian Rococo mirror design from the late 18th century is characterised by fluid asymmetry, ornate scrollwork, botanical carvings, and light, architectural silhouettes often influenced by Venetian craftsmanship.

These mirrors were traditionally constructed from hand-carved pine or lime wood, coated with gesso, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf over a clay bole base.
