The canterbury originated in late 18th-century England, traditionally used for holding sheet music, folios, and later newspapers and books, named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who reportedly commissioned the first design.

Authentic period pieces are typically constructed from fine timbers such as mahogany or satinwood, featuring handcrafted joinery, slatted dividers, and often incorporating a single lower drawer raised on castors.

Authentication relies on examining timber patina, hand-cut dovetail joints in the drawer, genuine brass hardware, and signs of period-appropriate wear and tear rather than modern machine tooling.

This piece functions effectively as a side table next to a sofa or armchair, serving a dual purpose as a sculptural storage solution for current reading materials and magazines.

Maintain the wood by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft cloth, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the timber without building up heavy chemical residues.
