Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A six-plank coffer, also known as a boarded chest, is a simple form of early wooden storage furniture constructed from six solid timber boards joined together with nails or wooden pegs. Popular throughout the 16th and 17th centuries, these pieces served as fundamental storage containers for household linens, textiles, and valuables.

These coffers were built using solid oak planks, incorporating a front board, back board, top lid, bottom board, and two side panels that often extend downwards to form the supporting end-boards or legs. Hand-forged iron hinges, latches, and lock plates were standard functional hardware elements fitted directly into the timber.

Authentic 17th-century coffers display hand-sawn timber marks, hand-forged ironwork with historical oxidisation, and irregular joinery such as hand-cut pegs or rose-head nails. Natural shrinkage of the oak across the wood grain and an uneven patina formed in areas of high usage are also indicators of age.

An antique oak coffer can be placed at the foot of a bed, inside an entrance hall, or against a living room wall as functional storage. Combining the textured dark oak surfaces with contemporary neutral textiles or modern artwork creates an effective visual contrast between historic timber and clean-lined aesthetics.

Maintain period oak furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a coat of natural beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood surface. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and maintain steady indoor humidity levels to prevent timber movement or split formation.
