Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 17th-century oak coffer is a joined wooden storage chest, typically constructed with frame-and-panel joinery and a hinged lid, used historically for storing textiles, linens, and personal possessions.

Traditional coffers were crafted using mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden oak pegs, floating hand-planed panels to allow timber movement, and hand-forged iron hinges and lockplates.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-hewn oak with uneven tool marks, wooden peg construction rather than modern screws or nails, natural timber shrinkage over time, original iron escutcheon wear, and dark oxidisation within the interior and underside.

Position the coffer in an entryway, hallway, or at the foot of a bed to serve as statement storage, pairing the rich patination of the oak with neutral linens, contemporary artwork, or textured modern rugs.

Keep the timber clean by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, and maintain stable indoor humidity away from direct radiators or heat sources to prevent cracking.
