An English Xv Century Pre-reformation Ecclesiastical Throne

Pre 16th century
For Sale by Ebury Trading
Description

A large English carved and polychrome painted medieval ecclesiastical throne. In the English gothic manner, with finely carved tracery, it is also decorated in the Italianate taste with polychrome paints and water gilding. The tracery panel to the lower seat has original fragments of red velvet, whilst there is a surviving stump work panel to the upper body, depicting the Virgin Mary and two Archangels. The indistinct coat of arms means its exact origin is unclear, although it came from the Winchester area in Hampshire, England.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pre-Reformation English Gothic design is characterised by architectural forms, pointed arches, traceried panels, and heavy oak construction, often enriched with gilding and polychrome painted details.

Pieces from this period were primarily constructed using native English oak, assembled with mortise and tenon joinery and wooden pegs, often finished with detailed hand-carving and gold leaf application.

Authentic items display hand-hewn tool marks, uneven structural timber dimensions, historical wood shrinkage around joinery pegs, and layered age-related patina or oxidisation within recessed carvings.

An oversized architectural seat functions as a dramatic focal point when positioned in expansive entry halls, double-height foyers, or formal library spaces against neutral stone or limewashed walls.

Preservation requires a climate-controlled environment with stable relative humidity, regular dry dusting with soft natural bristle brushes, and avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive polishes on historic gilding.
