This Victorian breakfront wardrobe and matching bedside cabinet consist of dark brown rosewood with contrasting satinwood marquetry inlay, glass mirror panels, and brass hardware. The structure includes an architectural pediment cresting above the central two-door cupboard, a mirror-backed open recess, and four long graduating drawers below, flanked by a pair of tall mirrored doors. Elaborate floral and scroll marquetry decorates the upper door panels, drawer fronts, pediments, and the small bedside door. The suite measures 235 cm high by 203 cm wide by 60 cm deep overall. Suitable for a master bedroom, this large storage combination provides extensive hanging space, a surface for display in the open recess, and additional drawer storage. The matching bedside cabinet offers a compact bedside surface with a lower enclosed cupboard. The rich timber tones and reflective mirror panels suit traditional interiors requiring substantial period storage furniture.

FAQs

A Victorian breakfront wardrobe is a large piece of bedroom storage furniture featuring a central section that projects forward beyond the flanking side wings. Popularised during the 19th century, these designs often integrated hanging space, drawers, mirrors, and decorative marquetry inlay.

Victorian cabinetmakers frequently used dense hardwoods such as rosewood, mahogany, and walnut for the primary structure. Decorative surfaces often incorporated floral or classical marquetry inlays made from contrasting timbers like satinwood or boxwood, alongside silvered glass mirrors and brass fittings.

Authentic pieces generally display hand-cut dovetail jointing on internal drawers, original hand-cast brass hardware, and heavy solid wood frame construction. The timber exhibits rich grain patterns characteristic of genuine rosewood, often accompanied by hand-cut veneer work and period glass with subtle imperfections.

A substantial Victorian wardrobe serves as a focal point in a spacious master bedroom, dressing room, or large hallway. Pairing dark timber and intricate inlay with neutral wall paint and simple contemporary textiles helps balance the elaborate historical ornamentation.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the item away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and fluctuating humidity to prevent wood warping, veneer lifting, or finish fading.
