Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Staffordshire figures are earthenware ornaments manufactured predominantly in the Staffordshire potteries region of England during the 19th century. Created primarily for working and middle-class homes, these press-moulded ceramics depicted folk subjects, historical icons, royalty, and theatrical performers.

These figures were cast using press-moulded earthenware clay, fired, and finished with a clear lead glaze. Hand-painted enamel colours and cobalt blue glazes were applied on top of or under the glaze to highlight costume details and facial features.

Authentic 19th-century examples typically feature a flat, unpainted back designed for mantel placement, visible mould release seams, small firing vent holes, and evidence of wear on the underside. They are generally unmarked by factory stamps, as they were mass-produced folk art items.

Position the piece individually on a shelf or styled mantelpiece alongside contemporary art or minimalist decor to create a high-contrast focal point. Curating multiple figures together inside a glazed cabinet or on a sideboard top adds depth to eclectically styled spaces.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush or lint-free microfiber cloth. Avoid submerging the piece in water or applying abrasive chemical cleaners, as water can enter the hollow interior through firing holes and damage delicate overglaze enamels.
