Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gateleg table features a drop-leaf top supported by movable leg structures known as gates, which swing outward when opened. Popularised in the 17th century, these tables frequently feature spiralled barley twist legs to combine decorative detail with adaptable surface space.

Traditional gateleg tables were constructed from solid oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. The spiral barley twist legs were hand-turned on a lathe, with heavy lower stretchers providing structural stability.

Look for hand-turned barley twist legs, hand-planed surface textures, and wooden peg joinery around the apron and stretchers. Authentic period wear typically appears on the foot rails, hinges, and edge rule joints from long-term use.

Fold the leaves down to use the piece as a compact console or side table, or raise one leaf to fit against a wall as a writing desk. The dark oak timber pairs well with modern linen fabrics, brass lighting, and contemporary ceramic displays.

Dust regularly with a dry lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax twice yearly to protect the timber finish. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent joint movement or timber warping.
