Antique Early 20th Century Carved Oak Commemorative Occasional Table C.1920

1900 - 1920
Description

An early 20th century oak tripod occasional table, with an attractively shaped top carved in bold foliate relief centred by a small cross, set over three splayed legs, each incised with a single poppy, united by a shaped undertier carved with crossed Allied flags and lettering.

Made in the years following the First World War, the combination of Allied flags, poppy carving and central cross clearly marks it as a commemorative piece, its restrained form and hand-cut detail reflecting strong Arts and Crafts influence.

Very good condition with minor surface wear and small marks consistent with age. Structurally sound, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1920.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A 1920s carved oak occasional table is a small accent table produced during the interwar period, often featuring Arts and Crafts or Jacobean Revival motifs, relief carvings, and solid timber construction.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid English or European oak using traditional joinery methods, such as mortise and tenon joints, splayed legs, and hand-carved decorative motifs.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural surface patination, aged tool marks on the carved detailing, sturdy construction joints, and subtle wear patterns around the feet and lower stretchers.

Place the table in a hall alcove or alongside a armchair as a plant stand, lamp surface, or display pedestal to introduce historical texture into modern living spaces.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct radiator heat and excess moisture.
