Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A gateleg table is a type of drop-leaf table featuring legs that swing outward like gates to support hinged extensions of the tabletop. First popularised in England during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, this design offered space-saving functionality for compact living spaces.

Traditional English gateleg tables were predominantly constructed from solid oak, though later examples from the eighteenth century used walnut or mahogany. Construction methods relied on mortise and tenon joinery, wooden pegs, and hand-turned leg supports without modern metal fasteners.

Authentic early period gateleg tables feature hand-planed surfaces, irregular wear patterns around the feet and stretchers, and original iron hinges or wooden pivot pins. Look for signs of hand-carved mortise joints and natural patination that develops over centuries in dark oak.

A gateleg table works well as a flexible console against a wall with leaves folded down, or as an occasional side table beside contemporary seating. Opening one or both leaves allows it to function as a compact dining surface or workspace in modern open-plan spaces.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent warping of the solid oak leaves. Regular dusting with a soft cloth and occasional application of high-quality beeswax nourishes the wood finish and maintains its natural lustre.
