Scottish Mahogany Longcase Clock by Ninian Davidson of Dunse

19th century
Description

Fantastic Scottish mahogany longcase clock, crafted by Ninian Davidson of Dunse, is in excellent antique condition. The eight-day movement is housed in a stunning hood featuring a swan neck pediment with a central brass finial topped by an eagle. Reeded columns with brass capitals flank an arched glass door, adding to its elegance. The brass face boasts a silver-coloured 12" dial adorned with decorative brass spandrels. The maker's name and place of work are engraved on a silvered brass roundel in the arch, framed by typical period spandrels. The longcase trunk features a long door with a decorative arched top and string inlay decoration, flanked by reeded columns. As with all antiques, there are minor imperfections, but this clock's striking appearance, warm colouring, and amazing patina make it a standout piece. This is an outstanding antique clock and a true statement piece.

Ninian Davidson was a clockmaker based in Dunse (now Duns), Scotland, during the early 19th century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Scottish Georgian longcase clocks are defined by their substantial mahogany cabinetry, often featuring swan-neck pediments, flame mahogany veneers, and regional dial signatures from local clockmakers.

Eighteenth and nineteenth-century longcase clock cabinets typically used dense mahogany, oak, or walnut woods, complemented by brass spandrels, cast brass movement components, and hand-painted or engraved metal dial faces.

Authenticity can be verified by examining the movement for period-correct hand-forged components, checking for original dial signatures matching known horological records, and inspecting cabinet joinery for hand-cut dovetails and natural age patina.

Positioning a longcase clock as a standalone focal piece in an entryway, hallway, or dining space creates an architectural anchor, blending historical craftsmanship with modern, minimal interior backdrops.

Maintain a stable humidity level to prevent timber movement, apply beeswax sparingly along the wood grain, keep the case out of direct sunlight to prevent veneer bleaching, and have the mechanical movement serviced by a professional horologist.
