Description

A superb Victorian Scottish drumhead grandfather clock in richly figured mahogany. The 8‑day movement strikes the hour on a bell and is signed by Andrew Thom of Airdrie (listed in Clockmakers & Watchmakers of Scotland, 1892–96).

The carved drumhead hood sits above a fine mahogany case with a lockable door. The gilt dial features black Roman numerals, a decorative floral centre, and subsidiary seconds and calendar dials.

With excellent colour, elegant proportions, and only light age‑related marks, this impressive clock is in good working order and remains a striking statement piece of real quality.

A drumhead longcase clock is a regional variation of the traditional tall clock, distinguished by a circular, drum-shaped hood housing the dial and movement. This style gained widespread popularity across Scotland during the nineteenth century, often crafted with rich flame mahogany veneers.

Victorian longcase clocks were primarily constructed using solid mahogany or oak frameworks faced with figured flame mahogany veneers. The clockwork mechanisms were made of brass and iron, accompanied by cast iron weights and engraved brass or painted dials.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on the casing, cast iron weights showing natural age, hand-engraved brass or painted dials, and makers signatures located on the dial face.

Position a longcase clock as an architectural focal point in an entrance hallway, dining room, or library. Pairing the warm mahogany timber with neutral walls highlights the silhouette and timber grain.
