Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French gilt bronze mantel clocks, often termed pendules de cheminee, were created as decorative horological centerpieces during the 19th century. They feature cast bronze sculptured figures, intricate chasing, mercury gilding or patinated contrast, and brass clockwork movements.

These timepieces were manufactured using lost-wax or sand casting for the bronze elements, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface details. The metal was gilded using gold mercury amalgams, and clockwork movements were fitted into the structural base, often paired with enamelled numerals.

Authentic pieces exhibit heavy cast weight, crisp hand-chased ornamentation, fine thread or steel suspension springs, and makers stamps or serial numbers on the backplate of the movement. Natural age wear, oxidisation on un-gilded areas, and original enamelled dial cartouches also indicate period production.

Position the timepiece as a central focal point on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, dark wood console table, or study bookcase. Pairing the warm metallic tone with neutral backdrops, architectural moldings, or contemporary art creates a balanced contrast.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry brush or microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid chemicals or abrasive polishes that strip original gilding. Mechanical clock movements require periodic professional servicing by a qualified horologist for cleaning and lubrication.
