Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This rare French side table dates from 1860 in the Louis XVI style. Constructed from painted wood, cane, and rattan, the piece has a grey painted finish with a distressed texture showing lighter undertones beneath the surface. The oval top features a delicate pearl moulding along the edge, supported by four fluted legs decorated with carved rosettes at the joints. Two lower tiers incorporate woven cane shelves within oval wooden frames, offering extra display space. The entire structure stands at 78 cm high, 81 cm wide, and 41 cm deep, providing a compact footprint suited for various interior layouts. In a modern home, this decorative table functions effectively as an end-of-a-sofa surface in a living room, providing convenient display space for lamps, books, or decorative objects. The tiered design allows for practical organization across multiple levels while maintaining an open visual presence. The neutral grey palette integrates smoothly with traditional and transitional schemes, bringing subtle period character to sitting rooms, studies, or reception areas without overwhelming existing furnishings.

FAQs

Louis XVI style furniture originating in 18th-century France is characterised by neoclassical principles, including geometric symmetry, straight lines, fluted column legs, and carved rosettes, frequently finished in painted or distressed tones.

These pieces typically feature carved hardwood frames, painted or gesso finishes, painted timber tops, and woven cane or rattan panels set into lower shelves.

Authentic period construction features hand-carved embellishments, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, historical wear on original painted surfaces, and hand-woven cane work on lower tiers.

Position the piece as an occasional side table beside contemporary seating or in an entryway, balancing the distressed patina with simple modern ceramics, books, or subtle lighting.

Dust the painted wood frame regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, vacuum the cane tiers gently with a brush attachment, and keep the table away from direct heat sources and moisture.
