FAQs

Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region of Japan and takes its name from the port of Imari, from where it was exported to Europe starting in the seventeenth century. Characterised by underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron-red and gilding, these ceramics reached high production levels for the Western market during the late Edo and Meiji periods.

Traditional Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired kaolin porcelain clay. The distinctive decoration is achieved through a multi-stage process involving underglaze cobalt blue application, high temperature firing, subsequent overglaze enamel painting in iron-red and green, and final decorative gilding fired at lower temperatures.

Authentic nineteenth-century Meiji pieces typically display hand-painted underglaze blue decoration alongside dense overglaze enamels and gilding. Inspection of the unglazed foot rim often reveals dense porcelain clay with slight discolouration from age, while hand-applied brushstrokes show minor variations in paint thickness.

Large decorative vases are frequently placed in pairs on a large sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to establish symmetry. They can also serve as focal points in entryways or be positioned within empty alcoves to add architectural height and visual texture.

Clean antique porcelain using a soft microfibre cloth slightly dampened with lukewarm water. Avoid abrasive cleaning agents, harsh chemical detergents, or submerging pieces with gilded or enamelled decoration, as these treatments can wear away delicate surface layers.
