FAQs

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export wares produced in the Arita area of Hizen province and shipped via the port of Imari. Developed in the 17th century, classic Imari features underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red, gold, and vibrant enamels depicting traditional Asian motifs.

These large vessels were hand-thrown from kaolin clay, shaped into sections, and fired at high temperatures with an underglaze cobalt blue pattern. Skilled artisans then applied hand-painted overglaze enamels and gilding before subjecting the piece to a second lower-temperature firing.

Authentic 19th-century pieces generally exhibit hand-painted brushwork with slight asymmetric variations, substantial porcelain weight, underglaze blue markings, and natural surface wear to the gilded edges and base rims.
