A fine quality large pair of Japanese Meiji period (1868-1912) Fukagawa porcelain vases. Each with wonderful bold Imari colours, the tapering bands of classical motifs from top to bottom. Mythical hand painted Dragons wrapped around the vases.

Fukagawa porcelain originated in the Arita region of Japan during the late nineteenth century, established by Chuji Fukagawa in 1894. The company gained international recognition during the Meiji period for producing high-quality porcelain decorated with intricate hand-painted enamels, combining traditional Japanese iconography with Western export preferences.

Fukagawa ceramic wares were constructed using fine kaolin clay fired at elevated temperatures to yield a hard-paste porcelain body. Artisans applied cobalt blue underglaze decoration before an initial firing, followed by detailed overglaze enamels and gilding that required subsequent lower-temperature firings.
