Impressive Pair of Large Arita Imari Lidded Vases, Circa 1680

19th century
Description

This exquisite pair of late 17th-century Japanese Arita lidded vases, dating from the 1680's , stands an impressive 85 cm high. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, these vases showcase classical scenes that reflect the artistic elegance of the era. The porcelain bodies are adorned with intricate hand-painted designs featuring traditional motifs, including nature themes and figures in kimonos, evoking the charm of Japanese culture.

The vases are further enhanced by gilded ormolu mounts, which add a touch of opulence and sophistication. These mounts frame the vases elegantly, contrasting beautifully with the vivid colors of the Satsuma glaze. The lids are topped with finely sculpted figures, likely representing beautiful geisha, which serve as both decorative and symbolic elements.

Each vase is a harmonious blend of artistry and craftsmanship, embodying the rich heritage of Japanese ceramics. The use of gold detailing, along with the vibrant palette of reds, greens, and browns, creates a striking visual appeal, making these pieces not only functional but also remarkable decorative art. Ideal for collectors and enthusiasts of Asian antiques, these vases are a testament to the skill of Japanese artisans of the period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Arita Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramics produced in the Arita region of Hizen province and shipped via the port of Imari during the Edo period. These wares feature overglaze enamels, iron red, and gilding, often portraying figurative or floral motifs designed for European display.

These ceramics were formed from kaolin porcelain clay, wheel-thrown, shaped into baluster forms, and high-fired. Decoration was applied using underglaze cobalt blue followed by low-fire overglaze enamels and gold leaf, with European gilt-bronze bases added subsequently for structural presentation.

Authentic period pieces display hand-painted decoration with minor brushwork variations, firing spur marks on unglazed surfaces, soft gold accents, and characteristic iron-red enamels. Metal mounts should exhibit historical patina and hand-chased construction consistent with early metalworking techniques.

Large lidded vases function as architectural accents when arranged symmetrically on sideboards, mantelpieces, or focal consoles. Placing them alongside understated minimalist elements highlights their historic silhouette and detailed glaze work.

Porcelain surfaces should be dusted gently using a dry microfibre cloth or soft bristle brush to protect overglaze enamel and delicate leaf gilding. Avoid immersion in liquid, chemical cleaners, or metal polish on mounted bases to prevent glaze degradation and patination loss.
