Imari porcelain originated in the Arita region of Japan during the seventeenth century and was exported to Europe via the port of Imari. These wares became highly sought after by European nobility for their vibrant enamels and intricate decorative panels.

Imari wares are crafted from fine kaolin porcelain clay, fired at high temperatures. Decoration typically involves an underglaze cobalt blue, followed by secondary kiln firings for overglaze iron-red enamel, multicoloured pigments, and liquid gold gilding.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces exhibit hand-painted variations in brushwork, subtle asymmetry, and minor glaze firing imperfections. Look for slight wear on the unglazed foot rim and natural rubs to the gilt highlights consistent with age.

Place a large Imari vase as a central focal point on a credenza, sideboard, or within a hallway alcove. The strong cobalt blue and terracotta red hues contrast effectively against neutral walls and polished wood surfaces.
