Antique Bidjar Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

A very fine and intricate pattern on this late 19th century antique Bidjar rug.  Woven with a classical Herati design in the deep blue main field and wonderful flowing border design in soft reds, with lovely greens and yellows.  In very good order all over for a rug of this age.  Gorgeous natural dyes and the pile height is excellent all over.  Bidjar rugs are known as one of the toughest rugs, due to their construction of 4 weft threads, they are always very heavy too!

The famous 'Herati' design is the pattern we see in the main field, which consists of two stylised leaves around a flower.  In the 16th century this used to be two fish swimming around a water-lily.  A great antique rug in wonderful condition, professionally washed and supplied with our sturdy anti-slip rug underlay.

Visit our barn showroom soon to see this rug up close and over a 1000 more in our collection.  We hold one of the largest collections of antique rugs and contemporary carpets in the UK.

Our home visit service allows you to view any of our collection in situ on a day and time that suits you.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the town of Bidjar in northwestern Persia, these rugs are renowned for their heavy, dense weave and durable construction, often referred to historically as the iron rugs of Persia. They typically feature intricate repeating all-over floral motifs or central medallions framed by detailed multi-tiered borders.

Bidjar rugs are hand-knotted using high-grade wool pile tightly beaten down onto a heavy cotton or wool foundation. Natural dyes derived from plants and minerals provide rich palette tones such as deep indigo navy, terracotta red, and subtle shades of green and blue.

Authentic pieces are distinguished by an exceptionally stiff, heavy structure that resists folding, caused by double-wefted depressed warp construction. On the reverse side, the hand-knotted structure reveals slight irregular knot densities and natural colour variation, known as abrash, from hand-dyed wool yarns.

A traditional Persian carpet grounds a room by introducing geometric or floral patterns beneath neutral contemporary furniture. It pairs exceptionally well with dark wood cabinetry, leather upholstery, and brushed brass fixtures in both traditional and minimalist interior settings.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting to prevent damage to the pile and fringe fibres. Rotate the rug annually to balance traffic wear and sun exposure, and utilise a quality underlay to absorb impact and prevent slipping.
