Seneh rugs originate from the city of Sanandaj, formerly known as Seneh, in the Kurdistan Province of western Iran. Woven primarily by ethnic Kurdish weavers, these rugs became renowned during the nineteenth century for their fine asymmetrical knotting, delicate floral repeating motifs, and durable wool construction.

Traditional Seneh carpets are hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun wool for the pile, bound onto a cotton or silk warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable and plant dyes were historically employed to produce rich blues, madder reds, terracottas, and ivory tones.

Authentic Seneh rugs can be identified by their extremely fine, thin weave, flat back texture, and precise detail in small-scale patterns like the Herati or Boteh design. They typically feature an asymmetrical knot structure and display natural colour variation known as abrash across the field.

A Seneh carpet can be styled as a focal point in a living room, dining area, or wide hallway. Its dark field and detailed geometric pattern pair well with neutral upholstery, mid-century timber furniture, or classic English country interiors.
