Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Edwardian period and early George V reign, silver-mounted scent bottles were functional vanity accessories designed for dressing tables and travelling cases. Produced in metalworking centres like Birmingham, these objects held liquid perfumes, toilet waters, or smelling salts.

These vessels typically combine clear cut or moulded glass bodies with hallmarked sterling silver mounts, caps, or stoppers. Additional decorative techniques frequently included enamel work, silver inlay, and engine-turned chasing.

Authentic British silver components feature official hallmark stampings, including the lion passant for sterling silver, an assay office mark such as the Birmingham anchor, a date letter indicating 1911, and a registered makers mark.

A silver-mounted scent bottle can be positioned on a tray atop a bedroom dressing table, arranged on a bathroom counter alongside glass apothecary jars, or styled on a bookshelf as a small decorative accent.

The glass body should be wiped clean with warm water and mild detergent without submerging the silver components. The silver cap requires gentle polishing with a soft microfibre cloth and specialised silver cleaner, avoiding aggressive rubbing on inlaid enamel.
