Antique Malayer Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

Woven with exceptional colours over 110 years ago, this beautiful Malayer rug is very fine and full of wonderful detail and rare dyes.  The soft yellow dye for the large scale medallion, sits in-between the dark blue, almost black dyes.  Malayer weavers loved using pinks and greens too, this rug has a lot of green in it, and the pink border is rich and adds a great balance to whole piece.  A very decorative and elegant rug.

Malayer is a large village located between the major weaving areas of Hamadan and Sarouk in Northwest Persia. In Malayer and the small villages surrounding it, production was almost exclusively small antique rugs and runners made by individual weavers in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Malayer rugs are hand-knotted textiles originating from the town of Malayer and surrounding villages in north-western Iran. Produced primarily during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these rugs are renowned for combining refined Persian floral motifs with stylized tribal geometric patterns.

These carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. Natural plant-based and mineral dyes were traditionally employed to create deep blues, terracottas, greens, and cream fields.

Authentic Malayer rugs often feature a combination of symmetrical or asymmetrical knots on a single-warp or double-warp structure, showcasing characteristic designs such as stepped central medallions or repeating geometric motifs. Subtle variations in dye shades, known as abrash, indicate hand-spun yarn and natural dyeing processes.

A Malayer rug anchors a room by introducing texture, geometric contrast, and traditional detail beneath contemporary seating or wooden dining sets. Pairing the carpet with neutral furniture allows the intricate pattern and rich palette to act as a grounded focal point.

Preserve an antique wool rug by vacuuming gently without a brush bar and rotating it annually to distribute foot traffic evenly. Professional hand-cleaning with pH-neutral products is recommended, alongside a quality underlay pad to reduce wear and movement.
