We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency period gilt mirrors, produced approximately between 1811 and 1830, are defined by classical symmetry, botanical carved motifs, and decorative crestings such as shells or acanthus leaves. They frequently featured oil gilding over carved pine or lime wood coated in gesso.

19th-century gilt mirrors were constructed using a hand-carved wooden coretypically pine, lime, or oaklayered with gesso, a mixture of chalk and binder. Thin sheets of gold leaf were then applied over a clay bole background and burnished to produce a radiant reflective surface.

Authentic 1820s mirrors exhibit signs of hand craftsmanship, such as irregular wood carving, natural shrinkage lines in the gesso, and dark oxidation spots on original mercurial glass. The reverse typically shows rough-sawn timber backing panels rather than modern plywood or MDF.

A large Regency gilt mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece or positioned opposite a window to bounce natural light across the room. Positioning gold leaf accents against muted or dark paint tones creates contrast within modern scheme layouts.

Giltwood frames must be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster without liquid cleaners, which dissolve water gilding. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent the gesso layer from cracking or flaking.
