Japy Freres Ormolu and Sèvres Porcelain Antique French Clock

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1880 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A magnificent ormolu (finely gilded bronze) and Sèvres style porcelain clock by renown maker Japy Frères. It is of a beautifully chic design, four turned corner columns with a cushion shaped top with 5 finials. The front and sides are mounted with Sèvres style porcelain panels with a beautiful blue ground. The front panel is finely painted with a scene of a young couple in a country setting, he hands her a basket of roses.

The side panels and the centre of the dial are exquisitely painted with garden birds nesting amongst flowers. Over-glaze gilt decoration is studded with red and white porcelain 'jewels'. The dial is part of the front panel and is complete with original finely fretted gilt hands.

The French movement is by Japy Frères and is of superb quality. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is an old replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link or paste the following into your browser: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=532237692697274

Condition of the case is very good, gilding is clean and bright with some wear to the gilding particularly on the high spots, where the clock has been handled, and some discolouration and tarnish. Porcelain is also very good with wear to the over-glaze gilt decoration, dial lettering and some applied jewels are missing.

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French ormolu mantel clocks from the 19th century are characterised by gilded bronze cases, often embellished with classical columns, finials, and hand-painted porcelain panels. These timepieces typically house eight-day pendulum movements crafted by famous Parisian and regional clockmakers.

These clocks combine heavy cast bronze treated with gold amalgam mercury gilding (ormolu) alongside kiln-fired ceramic panels decorated with enamel paints, metal mounts, and bevelled glass crystal dials.

Authentic Japy Freres movements feature a circular maker stamp impressed directly into the back brass plate, usually showing the company name alongside awards won at historical Paris industrial exhibitions.

A gilt bronze clock serves as a focal point when placed atop a marble fireplace mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or a central hall table, creating visual contrast against contemporary muted backdrops.

Gilt surfaces should be dusted gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive pastes that wear away original gold gilding. Mechanical movements require specialist lubrication and servicing by a qualified horologist every five to seven years.
