Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An overmantel mirror is a specialised decorative wall mirror designed during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Late nineteenth-century examples often incorporate Rococo Revival motifs, featuring intricate gilded frames crafted to capture and reflect candle and daylight across formal reception rooms.

Frames from this era were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood, often augmented with moulded composition (compo) for elaborate details. The frame surface was primed with gesso, painted with clay bole, and finished with applied gold leaf using water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic period mirrors exhibit natural age indicators, such as subtle foxing on the silvered glass plate, minor craquelure in the gesso, and areas where the reddish-brown underlying clay bole shows through worn gold leaf. Additionally, the timber backboard will display historic construction marks and natural oxidisation.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace surround or mount it over a hallway console table to anchor the space. Pairing gilded antique frames with contemporary plaster walls, dark paint shades, or minimalist furniture creates a balanced focal point.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical solvents, or household polish, which dissolve gesso and strip delicate gold leaf. Glass cleaner should be sprayed sparingly onto a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror plate to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame edges.
