An overmantel mirror is a decorative mirror specifically designed to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece, popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries to reflect light and enhance room proportions.

These mirrors were constructed using a carved timber core layered with composition gesso, finished with hand-applied gold leaf gilding and fitted with heavy glass.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved wooden backings, slight oxidation or foxing in the mirror glass, and natural surface wear showing red bole clay beneath the gilded gesso layer.

Position the mirror directly above a fireplace surround or lean it against a wall above a hallway console table to add vertical height and reflect natural light across contemporary living spaces.

Clean the frame using only a soft dry brush to remove dust, avoiding water or chemical cleaners which can dissolve gesso and damage delicate gold leafing.
