An overmantel mirror is a broad architectural wall mirror designed specifically to sit directly above a fireplace mantlepiece or chimney breast. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these mirrors reflect light across reception rooms and serve as a central focal point.

Traditional 19th-century giltwood mirrors were built using timber backing frames augmented with hand-carved wood or moulded gesso decorations. The frame surface was treated with clay bole before fine gold leaf was applied and burnished to create a luminous finish.
