Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Scottish pebble jewellery became widely popular in the mid-to-late 19th century, driven by Queen Victorias affinity for Balmoral Castle and Scottish culture. These pieces feature native Scottish stones such as agates, bloodstones, and jaspers cut and fitted into intricate silver settings.

Traditional Scottish brooches are constructed using sterling silver or nickel silver mountings combined with hand-cut local hardstones. Common varieties include montrose agate, carnelian, jasper, cairngorm quartz, and grey banded agates.

Authentic Victorian pieces feature precise hand-cut stone inlays with tight seams, tube hinges, C-clasps, and extended steel or silver pins. Unmarked silver mountings were standard for Scottish provincial work during the 1880s.

Antique agate brooches can be worn on modern coat lapels, wool scarves, or blazer collars to introduce historic pattern and texture. Alternatively, collector pieces are often displayed in glass-fronted velvet shadow boxes.

Clean agate jewellery using a dry soft cloth or mild soapy water applied with a soft brush, avoiding full immersion. Steer clear of chemical dips and ultrasonic cleaners, as these can damage silver patination or loosen inlaid stones.
