Description

Size: 10ft 8in x 4ft 7in (310 x 140cm).

Antique Baluch rug, by the Mahdad Khani tribe of the Ferdows region of Eastern Persia.

Circa 1900.

A large rug with three vertical rows of nine large Turkmen guls on a rich aubergine coloured ground. The large scale secondary gul design between the guls is typical of these rugs. The border is a well drawn and is one of the less common Baluch borders.

The rug is in good condition with slight even wear and good pile, very soft wool, note the original kilim end finishes.

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

Baluch rugs are traditionally woven by nomadic tribes across eastern Iran and western Afghanistan. They are recognised by their dark, muted colour palettesoften dominated by deep reds, dark browns, indigo blues, and natural wool tonesalongside repetitive geometric, gul, or tree-of-life motifs.

These carpets were primarily woven using hand-spun sheep wool for both the pile and the foundation (warp and weft). Goat hair was occasionally used for the selvedges, and cotton was sometimes incorporated into later warps or specific design highlights.

Authentic antique pieces feature soft, lustrous hand-spun wool dyed with natural plant and mineral dyes, resulting in subtle colour variations known as abrash. They typically display a flexible handle, wool foundations, asymmetrical knots, and flat-woven kilim ends.

A Baluch rug adds grounding warmth and textural contrast to neutral modern spaces. Place it over light oak floorboards, polished concrete, or layered on top of larger natural fibre carpets in hallways, living rooms, or study spaces.
