Antique Shiraz Rug

1900 - 1920
Description

Shiraz is the capital of the federation of six tribes in the south-west of Persia in the Fars region.  Antique Shiraz rugs are always vivid in design with amazing rosette motifs, star motifs, large geometric patterns in the four corners and a wonderful leaf border.   Usually Shiraz rugs use three connecting medallions in the centre, this design is quite complex and executed by a good nomadic weaver around 1920.  The stars, flowers, and stylised trees circling the central lozenge medallion in an almost diamond shape are rarer to find than most designs.

Condition is good, with some minor losses at both ends, and a small old repair in the central off white medallion, but hard to see unless looking up close.   A wonderful variation of dyes, and abrash in the blues and red tones.  A beautiful antique tribal rug to be used on the floor or hung on a wall.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Shiraz rugs are tribal textiles woven by nomadic and semi-nomadic weavers in the Fars province of southwestern Persia, primarily around the city of Shiraz. They are renowned for their geometric motifs, stepped medallions, and rich colour palettes dominated by deep reds, terracottas, and dark blues.

These rugs are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile on a wool warp and weft foundation. Natural vegetable dyes were historically employed to produce the deep indigo blues, madder reds, and cream tones typical of Southwestern Persian weaving.

Authentic pieces typically feature a flexible wool foundation, asymmetrical or symmetrical hand-tied knots, overcast double-selvedges, and distinctive geometric tribal iconography such as stylized birds, diamonds, and pole medallions.

The rich geometric patterning and deep palette make a Shiraz rug a grounding element in traditional settings, or in a contemporary space where it adds warmth, texture, and visual character alongside neutral soft furnishings.

Regular gentle vacuuming without a rotating brush bar helps maintain the pile, while prompt spot-cleaning with cold water prevents stains from setting. Professional specialist rug cleaning is recommended every few years to preserve the natural lanolin and wool fibres.
